Add the measured distance/height to your eye height.The distance is equal to the height of the tree from the height of your eye (see diagram above for clarification). Measure the distance from where you stand in step 3 to the base of the tree.Move backwards/forwards until your eye lines up with the top of the tree and the two shorter sides run parallel with the ground and tree trunk.Hold the triangle up to your eye and look along the longest side at the top of the tree.Fold the paper/card square in half to make a 45° right angle triangle.Measuring the height of a tree using a 45 degree angle.
